Kathy Simpson
  • Mrs. Kathy Simpson had a diagnosis of diabetes for ten years when she began to feel terrible. She learned from Dr. Lassiter and Karen Goodale PA-C that her diabetes was uncontrolled. She attended a diabetes education class and learned that exercise and weight loss would help her control her sugars. She began to understand that this would help her feel better. She states, “I’m a true believer in God. He gave me the willpower” to make positive changes in her life. She now walks around Harmon Field every morning with her husband, who encourages and supports her. She completes an exercise routine of her own making every evening at home. In addition, she lost twelve pounds by limiting her portion sizes and making healthier food choices.

Her advice is to elicit the support of others. Her husband Larry, for example, encourages her to get up every morning to walk with him and is with her literally and figuratively every step of the way. She also advises that you check with your provider before beginning a new exercise program and to build up gradually. She believes that it is very important to drink lots of water and to cut back on portion sizes. “My diabetes is now under control,” states Kathy, “and I feel a whole lot better!”

Healthy Aging Blog
  • Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog. I like to share my passion for healthy living! As a PA (Physician Assistant) who cares for families at Advanced Wellness Institute I emphasize a healthy lifestyle that includes healthy eating, adequate sleep and movement. As providers, we practice evidence based medicine. Every day I scan the scientific literature for recent studies that are relevant to our practice. Often these studies are about medications, but I also find the results of many studies that confirm the benefits of eating whole foods and being active. So even though the necessity for and benefits of medications are well researched and proven, there is also much research about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
